Rangers in crunch talks with out of contract top midfielder who’s attracting interest from top European clubs
Andy Halliday has instructed Rangers to abandon their player-trading approach and sign John Lundstram to a new deal.
The midfielder is free to speak with other teams, as his current contract at Ibrox expires in the summer,
but the former Sheffield United star has been a significant part of the club’s turnaround in form under Philippe Clement,
helping to propel the club to the top of the Scottish Premiership.
Clement has already stated that he wants to see the Englishman stay in Govan beyond the conclusion of his present contract.
However, Halliday believes the club will receive little resale value if they agree to extend Lundstram’s contract when he turned 30 earlier this year.
Clement and Rangers’ powerbrokers have lauded the player-trading strategy, which they hope will yield a profit in the future,
but former Ibrox midfielder Halliday has urged the club to go against the grain in order to keep their star player.
When asked on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard if his form changed if Lundstram was handed a contract,
the Motherwell midfielder responded: “I don’t think it affects whether he gets a deal or not;
I think it may change the conditions of the contract.
“I’m only guessing, but I believe he’d be among the top five highest earners at the club.”
Philippe Clement and Rangers are discussing saleable assets within the club,
and I believe John Lundstram is in that category where he will no longer be a saleable asset.
“If he signs a 2-3 year contract with Rangers,
he will be entering 32-33 and will have passed the point at which he will be sold for millions of pounds.
I believe one thing must be said: he has demonstrated this year that he is more than qualified for a new contract.”
