Will Salary Cap Increase Help Ravens Keep Top Free Agents?

Perhaps the Baltimore Ravens will be able to retain some of their top free agents after all.

Following the NFL’s announcement that the salary limit will rise by a stunning $30 million,

some teams seeking cap relief received significant aid.

Consider Baltimore as an example.

Before the hike, the Ravens were projected to lose key Pro Bowl players such as Patrick Queen and Kevin Zeitler.

To create place for franchise tag defensive tackle Justin Madubuike,

the organization would have to eliminate some of its more expensive players and restructure others.

They will now have some flexibility.

Over The Cap reports that the Ravens will now have $16 million in cap space. With defensive tackles set to earn $22 million from the tag, they’ll need to free up $6 million to give a guy like Madubuike the tag.

If the Ravens want to save money, they could restructure the contracts of quarterback Lamar Jackson, left tackle Ronnie Stanley, and defensive backs Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Williams. If all four are restructured, Baltimore might have more than $40 million to spend in free agency – not the most in the league, but certainly enough to strengthen the roster.

There are other changes the team can make, but with so many free agents to choose from, Baltimore will need to act swiftly to be in the middle of the AFC contending battle. However, the fact that they will be handed extra ammunition in the form of money will undoubtedly help.
