Breaking News: Top offensive coordinator will not return to Kansas City Chiefs for 2024 season

A top offensive coordinator will not be returning to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2024 season.

Following a disappointing regular season in 2023, the Chiefs were said to be looking to replace offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Eric Bieniemy was considered a longshot to return to Kansas City in 2023.

Following the Chiefs’ humbling loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day,

NBC Sports’ Mike Florio proposed that the Chiefs consider bringing in their previous coach, Eric Bieniemy, for the postseason.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes supported Bieniemy:

Mike Florio of NBC Sports believes the Chiefs might make a literal splash hire for the playoffs by bringing Bieniemy in after he is dismissed of his offensive coordinator duties in Washington.

Patrick Mahomes has hinted recently he misses his former offensive coordinator:

“First, the commanders would need to fire Bieniemy. If/when they replace coach Ron Rivera,

the Commanders may choose to retain other members of the staff until the future coach decides whether to keep him.

If that does not happen, and Bieniemy is released of his duties, he will be free to join any other team in the playoffs.

Why not return to the Chiefs? Quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently noted that Bieniemy provided discipline that the club lacked.

“I think Coach Bieniemy set that standard when he was here,” Mahomes said in a statement.”

Unfortunately for Bieniemy, the Washington Commanders retained him on staff throughout the playoffs until new head coach Dan Quinn fired him. The delay in his dismissal crushed Bieniemy’s chance to find another offensive coordinator job in the league for next season.

Bieniemy did speak with the Kansas City Chiefs during the playoffs.

During Super Bowl Week, Reid hinted at a reunion with Bieniemy in 2024. Bieniemy met with the team ahead of their AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens. Reid said he was a great fan of Bieniemy.

However, the Chiefs retained Nagy as offensive coordinator following the team’s Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Bieniemy was able to secure employment elsewhere.

Bieniemy will return to UCLA.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bieniemy has agreed to become UCLA’s associate head coach/offensive coordinator. Bieniemy said he is delighted to return to that section of the country.

“Southern California,” new UCLA Associate Head Coach and OC Eric Bieniemy wrote an email on Saturday. “I went to high school there. I began my league career here (with the Chargers). It’s certainly nice to be back with the Bruins, where I previously worked.

Bieniemy coached UCLA’s running backs during the 2003-04 season. Because of his new position at UCLA, he will not be able to return to the Chiefs’ sideline in 2024.
