McLaughlin has not played a single minute for Rangers in the 2023-24 season and is yet to be named to a matchday team.
His playing time has been limited as Robby McCrorie has been promoted to second-choice shot stopper.
Last season, McLaughlin made 16 appearances in all competitions,
surrendering 18 goals and maintaining eight clean sheets.
The veteran even played for Rangers in the Champions League, helping them advance to the group stage.
Butland was bought on a free transfer in last year’s summer window when Allan McGregor retired.
McLaughlin joined Sunderland for free in 2020 and has made 46 appearances for the club.
He signed his final contract extension in January 2022, although he will not be granted a new contract at Ibrox.
