Rangers boardroom duo set to stay once 49ers takeover
49ers Enterprises are working on a deal to take over at Rangers but look to be keen on maintaining some continuity at Ibrox.
The Gers are subject to major interest from the US consortium which is being led by Paraag Marathe who looks set to play a key role in the coming weeks and months.
It is unclear how long the process could take in Govan for the Light Blues to have new owners given the complexity of the current shares structure.
Regardless of this, it is clear that the prospective new shareholders are keen to set out their vision in G51 ahead of their potential purchase.
49ers to keep Patrick Stewart and Fraser Thompson at Rangers
There are plenty of issues at Ibrox right now, showcased by the failures of Philippe Clement as head coach before he was sacked in February.
The hierarchy eventually pulled the sack trigger but have opted to bring an interim boss in until the end of the season.
The appointment of Barry Ferguson doesn’t necessarily reflect well on Stewart as CEO at Ibrox but it doesn’t appear that it is going to have a negative impact on his role.
The 49ers seem keen on getting everything in order before their hopeful takeover and it appears that the ex-Manchester United chief will keep his job.
Gary Keown has revealed to the Scottish Mail on Sunday (2 March, page 98) that the US group want to leave Stewart and Thompson where they are.
He said: “Speaking to those with some insight into the intentions of the US consortium in talks to take a controlling share, the plan at the moment seems to be for Stewart and recently installed chairman Fraser Thornton to stay in position when the deal is done.”
Stewart to remain in Rangers role
If the 49ers are to take charge, there are two different ways they can go about things.
A decision could be made to start a clean slate and remove the current hierarchy and look for a fresh approach to challenge Celtic.
The gap is so sizable, so there is no guarantee that this would be possible in the near future, but is certainly something to aim for.
There is also the possibility of utilising the staff who are already in place and hoping that they are the right players to turn things around at Ibrox.
It will certainly be interesting what happens if a deal goes through, but Stewart may prove to be lucky to remain in his role either way.
