It would be a vast understatement to suggest that Johnny Manziel’s tenure with the Cleveland Browns was a disappointment. Manziel’s decline from grace is actually one of the more intriguing narratives in recent memory.

Manziel failed miserably to live up to the enormous expectations that were placed on him when Cleveland selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft due to a multitude of circumstances. It turns out that his troubles may have also been significantly influenced by one former teammate.

Brian Hoyer, a former quarterback for Cleveland who was the Browns’ highly anticipated starting quarterback in rookie season, is that man. Johnny Football claims Hoyer’s seeming lack of encouragement was a major factor in Manziel’s failure to transition to the major leagues:

In an interview with Shannon Sharpe for the latter’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Manziel stated, “My quarterback room was not a home for me because of Brian Hoyer” (via Justin Leger of NBC Sports Boston).

“Brian Hoyer didn’t hold back when it came to taking use of his opportunity to go really provide for his family. He saw how much of an advantage he had over me.

“In the early days of the quarterback room, there were occasions when I would ask the same question twice,

and he would sit at the head of the table and say,  again? Are we going to repeat this? Don’t include him in it.

Stop talking like that. Furthermore, I have nothing but praise for Brian Hoyer.

That is simply the reality of what took place in that room.

To be fair to Manziel, he acknowledged that his failures were ultimately the cause of his downfall.

That hasn’t stopped him from essentially putting Hoyer under the bus, though.

In fact, Manziel says that the other quarterbacks in

Cleveland at the time would have agreed with his evaluation of Hoyer’s demeanor:

“Ask Connor Shaw, the former quarterback for the

Browns who was with us in Cleveland and played at South Carolina.

How was Brian Hoyer in the room? Go ask him. Manziel remarked,

“Go ask (former Browns QBs coach) Dowell Loggains how he was in that room.”

“And it’s okay, but I could have used a little help at that particular moment when I was the franchise guy.”
