One of Rangers biggest problems this season has been the uncertainty over who the best number nine was, Cyriel Dessers has the actual shirt but there remain doubts about his suitability.
Under new Gers boss Philippe Clement, he has scored goals and created chances for teammates,
but he has also wasted numerous opportunities to add to his tally. If Rangers are to win the league title,
Cyriel Dessers must be his best self, and Tom Lawrence has spoken out on the much-maligned forward.
Rangers are expected to be in safe hands with Cyriel Dessers.
Dessers’ 14 goals and seven assists appear to be a decent return from his first season with the club,
given that they have occurred at a combined rate of more than one per 100 minutes.
However, as previously said, the most concerning aspect is the number of goals he has yet to score.
He could have easily scored over 20 goals this season if he hadn’t been so wasteful.
Lawrence, on the other hand, backed Dessers to deliver at a critical moment for those who pack out Ibrox:
“I believe that with any striker, it is all about confidence. When you start scoring,
you will have confidence and belief in yourself, and I believe that is what he has demonstrated.
“Confidence is simply a set of goals. When you start scoring goals as a striker,
your confidence develops and you have a stronger presence about you,
and I believe he’s demonstrated that; I think he’s been brilliant recently.
“Ronald de Boer was correct regarding Cyriel Dessers.
When Cyriel Dessers first signed, Ronald de Boer provided fascinating insight into what to expect.
It raised a few eyebrows at first, but it now makes perfect sense:
“Dessers is an opportunistic player.”
“When he is off of form or lacks confidence, he is a pretty limited player. Then you think, “Who the hell did we sign here?”
“But when a guy exudes confidence, you think, ‘Wow! “Where’s this coming from?”
The truth is, Dessers can be like this in a 90-minute match, let alone month to month or even week to week.
How many times have we seen him score a difficult shot but miss an easy one?
The essential thing is that he is getting in the correct position to score goals,
and he has been much more consistent under Philippe Clement.
He is not faultless, and he is arguably under the most intense strain of his football career.
Lawrence is right, however.
I would say “brilliant” is a little excessive, but Dessers’ play now has a confidence that it lacked previously.
He appears sharper and more physically fit.
He is getting there.
If there was ever a time to achieve the kind of form that made De Boer so enthusiastic, it is now.
