McCoist identifies the acquisition that Clement passed on that would have prevented Celtic from winning the SPFL.
Ally McCoist thinks that Celtic would have lost the SPFL Premiership title if
Phil Clement had signed Lawrence Shankland in January of last year.
The 51-year-old Belgian was fired last night after just one League Cup victory
during his 16 months in charge at Ibrox. Clement spent 10 weeks evaluating
his starting lineup before bringing in Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande
during Shankland’s incredible scoring run with Hearts. Despite media rumors that he was interested,
Clement never seemed to be convinced of Shankland’s abilities,
as he won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year Award. In February,
Clement’s team moved two points ahead of Celtic in the title race,
but the hoops came roared back.Listening to McCoist on TalkSPORT,
the Daily Record reports that the former Rangers manager stated:
If they had gone last year and acquired Lawrence Shankland (last January),
I think they might have won the league, I genuinely do. If they had gone and
given Hearts whatever they wanted, Shankland might have scored the goals
which won Rangers the league. However, it wasn’t to be, as Celtic deservedly
came back and won the league. The decline in the club, both on and off the field,
since they won the league and fell to Celtic.
