Given the run-in remark, the Sunderland star thinks Leeds United’s position is meaningless.

Luke O’Nein of Sunderland thinks it would be silly to assume that the race for promotion has already been decided.

Luke O’Nein, a star for Sunderland, has not given up on getting promoted automatically this season and has made it clear to his teammates, fans, and the rest of the division that the league standings is meaningless. The tough and unpredictable nature of the Championship, which saw Ipswich Town overtake Leeds last season to secure an automatic promotion spot alongside Leicester City, is all too familiar to a defiant O’Nein.

A 1-0 home loss to relegation-threatened Hull City on Saturday damaged his team’s chances and left them eight points behind Sheffield United and ten behind Leeds before the top two meet this evening at Bramall Lane, but O’Nein knows it is still possible, even though he refrained from saying that’s exactly what the Black Cats will do.

The Sunderland player is still not writing anything out for his team with 12 games and 36 points remaining. “There’s a ton of work to do,” O’Nein remarked.

“Whether you finish first or second doesn’t matter when you win a game. The most crucial factor is where you are in the 46th game. We have a lot of minutes to play, a lot of points to score, and we aren’t just focused on winning games. Take a look at the standings and feel emotional. Win, lose, think, make sure the team gets better, and move on to the next game.

Before playing consecutive home games against Cardiff City and Preston North End, Sunderland will make their league comeback on Friday night when they travel to Sheffield Wednesday.
