Everton handed new referee verdict after Man United VAR penalty controversy
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey believes VAR made a serious error during Everton’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
In stoppage time, Ashley Young was hauled back by Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, and the Blues were awarded a penalty. However, VAR instructed referee Andrew Madley to review the decision on the pitchside monitor.

After a lengthy review, he ultimately decided to reverse his decision, much to the dismay of many spectators inside Goodison Park and those watching from home.
VAR did not appear to show Madley the camera perspective from which it was obvious Young had his shirt pulled.
On X, Halsey commented on the incident and indicated that the situation did not reach the criteria for VAR to intervene. According to him: “Once referee has given the penalty VAR should never have got involved you can see the holding offence by De Ligt not a clear and obvious error by the referee.”
The ECHO understands that the foul was called for Maguire’s challenge on Young, and both VAR and the referee considered De Ligt’s actions during the review.
On Saturday afternoon, a Premier League statement said: “VAR reviewed the referee’s call of a penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and determined that no foul had been committed, recommending an on-field review.” The referee reversed the initial judgment and began play with an indirect free kick.”
