Football has always been a part of Elise Hughes‘ life. From playing football in Connah’s Quay with her father, Big Pete, to playing for Wales at the age of 16, her path has been one of unwavering love and determination.
But football, like life, has its highs and lows. For Hughes, the lowest point came with the dreaded three-letter diagnosis: ACL, an injury she sustained in the first-half of Palace’s win away at Lewes on 21st April 2024.

She had been flying for Palace, winning the Golden Boot in the Barclays Women’s Championship, and establishing herself as a key player for the team and the nation. Then, in a single moment, everything changed .Reality struck swiftly. After years of advancing through the ranks, Hughes was abruptly placed on the sidelines and had to endure the difficult journey to recovery.
“It was obviously really tough to take,” she remarked. For me, the first several weeks were quite the rollercoaster.
“You won the league, you had your ACL repaired, you had all the individual awards, and then you had your operation,” the statement said. It’s like learning to walk again after that.
