The 7 players Derby County stand to lose for £0 at the end of the season

Derby County are firmly in the fight for survival after a concerning slide down the Championship table under Paul Warne.

Derby County have since parted ways with Warne and replaced him with John Eustace, but a big task lays ahead. DCFC were thrashed 4-0 by QPR in the new boss’ first game at the helm.

Survival has been the Rams’ priority since winning promotion back to the Championship last season and they looked well-placed and well-equipped to do so in the opening months of the season.

Things have taken a drastic turn for the worse though, and while other clubs have picked up valuable points, the Pride Park outfit have slipped down to 22nd in the Championship table.

Some eyes will be on the long-term though, with Derby County contracts sure to come into focus soon. There are seven players out of contract this summer as it stands, with all potentially moving on for nothing…

Derby County players out of contract in 2025

For starters, there are seven senior Derby County players out of contract at the end of the season. They are:

Craig Forsyth, Tom Barkhuizen, Conor Washington, Matt Clarke, Kane Wilson, Rohan Luthra and Liam Thompson

Of those, there are certainly some strong candidates for moves away from Pride Park after the season’s end.

Striker Washington appears to be completely frozen out of the DCFC first-team set up with not a single appearance made this season. Of those out of contract, he seems the most likely to move on.

Luthra is yet to make a senior appearance, mainly serving as third choice, but he may stay on in such a role if he wishes to do so. New centre-back Clarke only signed on a deal until the end of the season, so his future likely depends on how this campaign ends for Derby County and whether he can impress or not.

Forsyth and Barkhuizen are in similar positions as vastly experienced players who remain helpful to have around the squad, but neither have key roles now. Scottish defender Forsyth has now spent nearly 12 years as a Rams player.

As for wing-back Wilson, he’s shown bright sparks since signing in 2023 but injury has been a regular problem, preventing him from finding consistency.

One DCFC exception…

Of the seven players, one exception is Liam Thompson.

As an academy graduate aged 22, Derby County would be due compensation for him if he was to leave. However, he would only qualify for such if DCFC offer him new terms equivalent to or more than the current agreed upon terms of his deal.

Training compensation will come the Rams’ way if so, but if he is not offered a deal at all or offered a worse contract, he too could depart for £0.
