League One club appoint Paul Warne after Derby County sacking

Derby County sacked Paul Warne earlier this month but as per Alan Nixon, he’s admired by League One side Rotherham United.

Derby County bit the bullet earlier this month and decided to part ways with Paul Warne. The 51-year-old had DCFC on a slide towards the bottom three and was duly relieved of his duties.

The Rams have since named John Eustace as his replacement and he was in for a rude awakening as his side were thrashed 4-0 by QPR in his first outing.

It remains to be seen what lays ahead of Warne, who has been a mainstay in the Championship and League One dugouts. Now though, speculation of a return to former club Rotherham United has emerged.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon states that former Derby County boss Warne retains admirers in the Millers hierarchy.

If their League One struggles continue under Steve Evans a change could be made, and Warne could be under consideration for a return to the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

There is not a feeling that Warne’s reputation has been harmed despite his recent DCFC exit. He led them back to the Championship and had them playing fairly well at that level before a concerning slide over recent months.

Back to the Millers?

Warne had been in charge at Rotherham United for over five years when he decided to depart for Derby County in September 2022.

He had served as an assistant coach with the Millers after retiring in 2012 and after backroom roles for four years, he stepped up as caretaker boss and was duly given the permanent job. He won promotion from League One twice and led a total of 270 games as permanent boss.

Currently at RUFC, Steve Evans has them sat 14th. It has made for a highly underwhelming return to the third-tier and after one win in six, pressure os back on Evans after an upward turn.

No harm done by Derby County stint

It is interesting to see that Warne’s reputation has not been harmed by his time at Derby County, perhaps rightly so too.

He remained a popular figure among players and ultimately achieved the set goal of winning promotion. Some may feel he deserved more time to work with his new January signings in the bid for survival, but their form has been worrying and many feel the sacking was justified.

Time will tell whether Eustace can now turn the tide at DCFC while it will be interesting to see where Warne ends up next, with Rotherham United still an admirer of his abilities in the dugout.
