Waghorn began his career at Sunderland before moving on to Leicester City, Wigan Athletic,

Ipswich Town, and Coventry City. He also spent two years in Scotland with Rangers, the England Under-21s, and a variety of loan clubs.

In a widely travelled career, his final club was Northampton Town, for whom he played eight games before Christmas.

“I am proud to have worn the shirt of every one of these great clubs,” he wrote on X, external. “Every time I stepped on the pitch, all I wanted to do was make my family proud.”

Waghorn made his Sunderland debut for Roy Keane on Boxing Day 2007, against Manchester

United at Old Trafford, aged 17.

Throughout his 17-year career, he appeared in 527 games and scored 135 goals, although his most successful period was at Ibrox.

Moving to Scotland in 2015, he was the highest scorer in the Scottish Championship with 20 goals,

and 28 in total that season, as Rangers won the title and regained promotion to the top flight.

He added 16 more the next season before returning to England to score 16 in the Championship for Ipswich.

That won him a move to Derby County, where he was part of the Rams’ Championship play-off final defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.
