Police investigate Abdoulaye Doucoure of Everton for racist insults.
Following the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Abdoulaye Doucoure was the target of racist taunts,
which Everton and Liverpool have denounced.
The Reds midfielder objected to his opponent’s celebrations in front of the visiting fans after James Tarkowski
equalized in the eighth minute of extra time, and he and Curtis Jones were sent off for second bookable
offences after a scuffle after the final whistle.
Doucoure was subsequently targeted with abuse on social media after the 2-2 Premier League draw.
The two clubs issued a joint statement saying, “Everton and Liverpool are aware of – and condemn in the strongest possible terms – racist abuse received by Abdoulaye Doucoure following Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby.”
Such mistreatment is abhorrent and should never be accepted.
The two clubs will collaborate with Merseyside Police, who are looking into the incident in an effort to find the culprits.
Additionally, we urge anybody who sees or encounters online abuse to report it and draw attention to it on the social media sites where it occurs.
“A zero-tolerance policy must be adopted by everyone, including the social media corporations. Platforms must be held accountable and take steps to prohibit these kind of abuses.
“Hate and racism have no place in our stadiums, online, or inour communities.” Merseyside Police appealed for any information which may identify those responsible. “We are investigating this and take these reports of hate crime extremely seriously,” Chief Superintendent Claire Doyle said. “If you have any information in relation please let us know because it could help our ongoing enquiries.
