Manchester City made it apparent that they had no plans to sign Bruno Guimaraes to address their midfield problems, so the worry started even before the January transfer window opened.

Guimaraes wasn’t cheap or for sale, but he wasn’t totally off the table either, and he might have been signed for the proper amount. Despite reports that he could have been available for less, Newcastle’s position in the summer was that they would not sell for anything under his £100 million release clause.

The pursuit would have been extremely dangerous, particularly in January. but with a significant payoff. After deciding against Guimaraes, City appeared to be without a defensive midfield addition for the entire month of January.
