Blackburn coach John Eustace confirms his move to Derby County and discusses his new backroom crew.
David Lowe, who replaced departing manager John Eustace, praised his team as a “credit to the club” after Blackburn defeated West Brom, a rival in the Championship play-offs, 2-0. Two minutes after halftime, Makhtar Gueye’s powerful volley from inside the box put Rovers ahead, while Adam Armstrong and Will Lankshear’s goals for West Brom were disallowed for pushes and offside, respectively. Gueye added a second goal in the 63rd minute as Blackburn overtook the Baggies, moving them into fifth place after ending a three-match losing streak on the road.
Prior to the match at the Hawthorns, stand-in coach Lowe managed the team and virtually confirmed Eustace and his backroom staff’s departure, as they were in negotiations with Derby, who were in danger of relegation.
“It has been a challenging week when you lose your head coach and two assistants,” Lowe remarked.
However, the players have truly been a credit to the team and themselves, coming to a country like this where they don’t lose many games. They knuckled down and tried their hardest.
In the warm-up, he continued, “I thought they were really good, and sometimes you get a feel for the players who are a little bit down or sulky.”
However, I felt that these guys were willing to put in the effort and demonstrate their abilities tonight.
“They’ve got some strong characters in there. I’m not too concerned about the character. They are top-class guys and as long as I’m in charge I’ll attempt get a tune out of them.”
