£30m Leicester City flop continues sensational form for club, Champions League now within touching distance
Leicester City have had their fair share of transfer flops over the years but one has now turned his career around.
Most fans will probably argue that the majority of players signed by the Foxes in the most recent summer transfer window are flops.
Odsonned Edouard’s Leicester City spell has been woeful, failing to score a single league goal and not even making it into most matchday squads.
Meanwhile, Oliver Skipp’s transfer from Tottenham Hotspur was a nightmare, with the £20m man already failing to get into the eleven and putting on some poor performances when he does.
However, there is one player who left the club fairly recently and is now in some of the best form of his career.
Leicester City flop Ayoze Perez could secure Villarreal Champions League football
After a five-year stint with Newcastle United, Leicester signed Ayoze Perez on July 4th, 2019 for £30m, as per BBC Sport.
The now 31-year-old spent four years at the King Power Stadium before he was loaned to Real Betis in January 2023 and then completed a free transfer in the summer of that year.
Despite previously playing well in the Premier League with Newcastle, Perez managed to find the back of the net just 15 times in 114 appearances for Leicester during his spell there.
The Spaniard left Real Betis in the most recent summer window to link up with fellow La Liga side, Villarreal.
For The Yellow Submarine, Perez has already scored 12 goals and provided two assists in just 17 games – nearly matching his Leicester tally in just under 100 games less.
He most recently scored in a 5-1 win over Real Valladolid, which sent Villarreal up to 5th place in the Spanish top flight and only five points off the Champions League places with a game in hand.
Ayoze Perez Villarreal stats compared to Leicester City strikers
Given the state their club is in right now, Leicester fans probably wished things had worked out differently with Perez at the King Power.
Jamie Vardy, despite being 38, remains the Foxes’ top goalscorer in 2024/25 with eight goals and three assists in all competitions.
His backup option, Patson Daka, has only scored one goal in 12 appearances this term, though most of those have come off the bench.
As already mentioned, Edouard is still yet to get off the mark in his eight outings, while Jordan Ayew has five in 27 this term.
