When Newcastle United calls up a 17-year-old attacker against Birmingham, the £80 million pair is left off the matchday squad.
The starting lineup for Newcastle United’s FA Cup fourth-round matchup against Birmingham City has been confirmed.
Eddie Howe has made nine changes to the team that defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
Wilson, 32, will start up front for Newcastle for the first time this season, making it his 114th appearance for the
Magpies but his first in the FA Cup. Nick Pope makes his first appearance in the starting lineup in two months after
bouncing back from a knee injury. In defense, it’s Emil Krafth’s first start since October and only
Matt Targett’s second start in 15 months. Will Osula starts on the wing, and Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff,
and Lewis Miley return to the team.
As I’ve stated numerous times, we don’t have a very deep squad, particularly given the injuries we’ve sustained,
such as Joelinton’s absence and Sven [Botman’s] absence.
However, we make an effort to select a squad that we believe has the strength to prevail. We provide other players
with opportunities, but they must seize them because, given our strength in the battle for our starting eleven,
they must seize every opportunity. Due to already known injury concerns, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Harvey Barnes,
and Jamaal Lascelles are all out. Due to a minor knee injury, Botman was forced to leave the game after starting against Arsenal.
