Exeter City Boss Slams FA Cup Rule Ahead of Nottingham Forest Clash: “It’s Killing the Magic of the Cup!
Gary Caldwell has lamented the rule change that means Exeter City’s FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest must be settled on the night.
For the first time in the competition’s long history there will be no replays in the cup meaning League One Exeter have no chance of what would have been a lucrative City Ground replay were they to hold the Reds on Tuesday night.
While Caldwell, who won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013, accepts his team have a better chance of causing an upset at their St James Park, he knows it’s far from guaranteed.
We know we are massive underdogs,” Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon. “But with the magic of the cup there is always that possibility of an upset and we believe that at our very best we can do that. At home, football-wise you’ve got a better chance of winning [but] financially it’s less positive for the club.
“It’s a Premier League team that is doing extremely well, really surprising people this year with how high they are up the table, pushing for a Champions League place,” he said.
“So not just any Premier League team, but a Premier League team that is showing what a good side they are week in, week out – only last week winning 7-0.
