Former Vissel Kobe left-back Ryo Hatsuse has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, who was a member of the Vissel team that won the J-League title in 2023 and 2024,

joins the Owls after a trial period with the Championship team. He could make his debut on Saturday

when they travel to West Bromwich Albion. Wednesday has not disclosed the length of the contract he has signed.

West Bromwich Albion will try to recover from their 2-1 loss to bottom-place Plymouth when they host fellow play-off contenders Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (12:30 GMT). The Owls are only two points behind Middlesbrough in seventh place on goal differential, but they could move into the top six with a win, even if it’s only temporarily. West Brom has won three of their last four home league games against Sheffield Wednesday (D1), after going winless in the previous seven (D4 L3). Sheffield Wednesday has defeated West Brom in both of their previous two league games against West Brom, with their last consecutive victories occurring between 1961 and 1963 (5).

This season, Sheffield Wednesday’s first three away league games ended in defeat. But only Burnley (25) and Sheffield United (23) have accrued more away points in the Championship since the beginning of October than the Owls (20).

Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith has scored in both of his past two league games, coming off the bench both times. He last scored in three consecutive league games inside the same season in August/September 2021 while at Rotherham.
