Derby County owner sent clear Paul Warne message ahead of tough Norwich City test
Derby County owner sent clear Paul Warne message ahead of tough Norwich City test
The Rams have been urged to stick with head coach Paul Warne despite a run of eight successive defeats in all competitions.
The latest, a 1-0 home loss to promotion-chasers Sheffield United,
sparked a torrent of boos from the terraces, prompting Warne to claim:
“It’s a little bit like being a panto dame”.
The Rams’ worst run of league results for 17 years has left them in the Championship relegation zone,
two points from safety and facing a tough trip to Norwich City on Saturday (3pm).
But club owner David Clowes has been told that Warne is still the right man to lead the ailing Rams
even if they go down this season.
In fact, former England midfielder and pundit Carlton Palmer believes Warne’s
position is already safe after the club backed him in the transfer window,
bringing in Sondre Langas, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Matt Clarke on permanent deals,
and signing young Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong on loan.
Palmer told Football League World: “His job should be safe, even if they go down.
He’s done a fantastic job at the football club given the circumstances with the budget from the time he’s gone in there.
“It’s brilliant to see a club like Derby, who’ve seen the manager do so well for them, say ‘Okay,
it doesn’t work in changing the manager, Paul Warne’s done a fantastic job given the circumstances’.
“If Derby stay up this season then they will have had a magnificent season.
We all know it’s a results industry, and Derby need to get a couple of results quickly,
but they have had a busy, busy January transfer window and the manager has been backed.
“So very, very good for Derby County in being able to bring in four players in this transfer window,
and let’s hope they can improve the squad and help them to secure safety.”
Derby are currently 22nd in the Championship after 30 games and desperate to retain their status after
winning promotion under Warne from League One last season.
However, their task was not made any easier by the £9m sale of defender Eiran Cashin to Brighton in the
closing days of the market.
Warne’s wife was at Pride Park for the Sheffield United defeat,
and the Rams boss told the BBC his mother had been at recent matches when he was the subject of
similar abuse as heard on Saturday.
He added: “In fairness, my family are quite leathered up. They have had a son or brother that had a very average (playing) career, so they are probably used to hearing a good bit of abuse off the terraces.
“I wouldn’t want to go see my son play on a Sunday morning and hear him getting abused, that would obviously upset me. You don’t want to see your loved ones get abused.
“I would never ask my wife to stay away, but if she ever felt uncomfortable then I couldn’t force her to (attend matches). However she does know I’m a football manager.”
