‘I’m disappointed’ – Liverpool prodigy Jayden Danns speaks out after Sunderland transfer twist
The deadline day loan move for Jayden Danns was not straightforward in the end.
Sunderland’s delight at signing the highly-rated Liverpool lad was tempered by the news that
the striker has a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation before he can make his debut.
Danns is extremely well regarded on Merseyside,
so much so that he signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool before committing to
Sunderland for the rest of the season.
he has appeared for Arne Slot’s side on four occasions this campaign,
including in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven.
Sunderland are signing a player of huge potential as they look to maintain their promotion push.
Regis Le Bris’ men sit fourth in the Championship, hot on the heels of Leeds United and Sheffield United,
who occupy the top two positions.
Securing the services of a striker to aid their quest was of paramount importance to
Kristjaan Speakman and the Sunderland recruitment team during the winter transfer window.
Having missed out on the likes of Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon to Sheffield United,
and Marcus Edwards to Burnley, landing Danns was a boost.
However, the player will have to wait before he can help his new team-mates.
At his medical, a back injury was identified and the 19-year-old will have to return to Liverpool’s
training ground for the first part of his rehab.
It’s a temporary setback, but Danns is delighted to be part of the squad,
and says he did his homework on the club before joining, having had offers from fellow
Championship clubs Hull City and Blackburn Rovers.
He said: “This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself,
so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the club for placing their faith in me.
I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step.
“I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway,
but I’m proud to have joined the club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure
I can return to action and play my part.”
Danns played in last season’s EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium,
as Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the capital to secure himself a winners’ medal.
He then scored twice in an Emirates FA Cup victory over Southampton four days later.
The striker joined Liverpool aged eight and last scored for the Reds one month ago,
as Slot’s side secured a 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.
It underlined the potential that Sunderland hope will help them towards promotion,
and explains why they were willing to wait until deadline day to land their man.
Speakman said: “Jayden is an extremely talented player, who fits the profile we were searching for.
His availability was always going to be determined late in the window due to Liverpool’s
schedule and the demand for him was high, so we worked extremely hard to secure the player.
“It’s unfortunate that the medical process highlighted an issue that ultimately requires Jayden to take a period of rest. Despite this, he remained highly motivated to come to Sunderland and as such we agreed to collaborate with Liverpool to ensure there is an opportunity for him to join us at a later date.
“We remain excited by the prospect of working with him and look forward to supporting him throughout the upcoming period.”
