Due to their subpar summer performance, Leicester City ends the winter transfer window with

just one new player, one less than its relegation rivals.

Although they had a backup right-back, Leicester City started the January transfer window in t

he relegation zone and finished it there.

The window seems to have been insufficient. It was evident from watching City over the last

few months that they needed more assistance in the form of new acquisitions. They have not yet

been delivered.

At the very least, it appeared like a top centre-back was needed to try to patch up the defense’s

holes, and considering Abdul Fatawu’s injury, a flying winger was also crucial. Many would also

argue that a new striker would have been excellent to relieve pressure on Jamie Vardy, who is 38.

None of those have been granted to Ruud van Nistelrooy. It places him in a challenging position

where he must come up with fresh ideas with a team that hasn’t been able to keep City afloat thus

far. It will put his managerial skills to the test.

This is particularly true given that Wolves, Ipswich, and Southampton—the three teams City

appears to be vying with for 17th place—have all performed better. Compared to City, they have a

more robust team at the end of the winter window.

Although it would seem like a terrible window, the reality is that City was constrained by past

poor business. Due to restrictions imposed by the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), City was

only able

to make one acquisition. They were eager to add players who would enhance the starting lineup

rather than just add heft to the team, which was a sensible strategy…
