Marcus Rashford rejected Barcelona and Man United’s final requests before Aston Villa move, it could have saved millions

Manchester United will be without Marcus Rashford for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Following Ruben Amorim’s criticism of Marcus Rashford’s training, the 27-year-old missed 13 consecutive games before completing a winter move.

Rashford has joined Aston Villa on loan, where he will hope to rediscover his form playing under Unai Emery.

In his first interview at his new club, Rashford said the Villa move was only ‘short term’, but a £40m buy option in Rashford’s deal means that he could end up joining permanently in the summer.

Rashford staying in the Premier League came as a bit of a shock after he made it clear that a move to Barcelona was his preferred destination. However, financial issues meant the Spanish side could not get a deal over the line.

Marcus Rashford rejected Man United’s wage request

One of the positives about the loan move is that 75% of Rashford’s wages are being covered by Villa. That could increase to 90% based on performance-related bonuses.

Rashford is earning £300,000 per week on his current United contract, so his loan move will end up saving the club millions. However, United did make one request to Rashford that would have saved even more money.

As per The Athletic, United wanted Rashford to find a loan club willing to pay a significant proportion of his wages and then for him to forgo the rest.

If Rashford agreed, it would effectively take his wages completely off the club’s books for the remainder of the season.

However, Rashford rejected the request meaning United are still paying him around £75,000 per week during his loan spell.

Marcus Rashford’s awkward Old Trafford return scheduled

Rashford was urged to leave United by club legend Wayne Rooney, who believes that a move away could help him get his career back on track.

If Rashford does shine at Villa, it will be interesting to see if he plans on returning to Manchester or completing a permanent move in the summer.

He will likely now his plans by the end of the season, and ironically Villa’s last Premier League match of 2024/25 is a trip to Old Trafford.

Rashford will be unable to face United in the Premier League due to parent club rules, but he could face the Red Devils if the two clubs meet in the FA Cup.

Rashford could make his Villa debut in the FA Cup on Sunday when his new side face Tottenham.
