‘It has been tough’: Joe Rothwell discusses if he will be at Leeds United next season

Not many could have predicted just how good Joe Rothwell has been for Leeds United since the midfielder arrived at Elland Road on loan from Bournemouth.

The experienced technician joined Leeds on a season-long loan as one of Daniel Farke’s first signings in the summer. But it was met with a mixed reaction from Leeds fans, questioning if he improved the squad.

That is despite Rothwell bringing with him a wealth of Championship experience and earning a Premier League move to Bournemouth. Even his four goals in a half-season spell at Southampton didn’t convince.

But Farke believes Rothwell has proved Leeds fans wrong, and the German manager is right. The set-piece specialist has been excellent in midfield, handing the Yorkshire side with a different dimension in midfield.

Joe Rothwell discusses Leeds United future beyond loan spell

With 16 games left in the Championship season, it remains to be seen what happens with Rothwell. The midfielder has 18 months left on his Bournemouth contract, which is said to be worth £30,000 a week.

Speaking to Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet’s deadline-day special, Rothwell said he is still unsure if he will be at Elland Road come the end of his loan with Leeds yet to know which division they will be in next season.

“This one [loan] has been tough because I’ve moved up without my family, my kids being in school. It wasn’t just a case of moving them with me because I don’t know what’s going to happen next season.

“I made the decision with my wife to leave them, it’s been tough. I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like to but we knew it was a sacrifice we had to make. Hopefully next season we’re back together again.

“It’s gone as well as it could have done, it took some time but when I got that chance I knew I could show what I’m about. It’s gone better than I could have expected. Who knows what will happen next season.”

What Graeme Bailey has said about permanent Joe Rothwell deal

It is unclear what kind of fee Bournemouth would want for Rothwell, given they signed him on a free from Blackburn. It is his second loan spell away from The Cherries and a permanent fee is unlikely to be big.

There may also be some residual add-ons or instalments for the likes of Tyler Adams or Luis Sinisterra that could be cancelled to sweeten a deal. Do Leeds want to sign Rothwell permanently come the summer?

Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that promotion is a necessity if Leeds want to sign Rothwell on a permanent basis. But it is easily foreseeable that if Leeds don’t go up, Rothwell would still like to sign on.
