‘The whole stadium’… A star makes note on playing at Celtic with Rangers

Malik Tillman has given his verdict on playing for Rangers against Celtic at Celtic Park.

Malik Tillman, who is now on loan at PSV from Bayern Munich, played against Celtic at Ibrox and at Celtic Park during his loan stint with Rangers in the 2022–2023 season.

During his stint with Rangers, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder made 22 starts and six substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership. In those contests, the USA international tallied 10 goals and provided four assists.

Throughout the 2022–2023 Rangers season, Tillman made four starts and one substitute appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

Malik Tillman about playing at Celtic Park against the Rangers

The young player has been thinking back on his time playing against Celtic at Celtic Park, when Rangers supporters were not permitted inside the stadium. The player is currently on loan at PSV in the Netherlands from German powerhouse Bayern.

After seeing Rangers vs. Celtic games, Tillman told The Athletic,

“Wow.” An abundance of stress. While I was there, we sadly didn’t win any of them, but it was still a positive experience.

“It was the entire crowd against you after the first game against Celtic, as far as I can recall. No more away fans were permitted inside the stadium. No one will applaud if you score. It was insane and entirely strange.

We have a fierce rivalry with Feyenoord (the Rotterdam team that is now the champions) here. When Glasgow’s supporters brawl and lose control, it’s more about other issues like religion.

Thrilling contest for the Scottish Premiership title

Although Celtic has dominated the Scottish Premiership in recent years, there is a chance that things will soon change.

Right now, Rangers are leading the league table. With 26 games played, the Gers have amassed 64 points—two more than the reigning champions Celtic.

Rangers were seven points behind Celtic when they fired manager Michael Beale in October of 2023. After taking charge at Sunderland, Beale was fired by the English team.
