£5m player just made his biggest contribution to Leeds United since joining in 2022 despite being sent on loan
The race for automatic promotion has taken another twist this weekend after Sheffield United and Sunderland both dropped points, with Leeds United staying first even though they play on Monday.
Sheffield United were hammered by Joe Gelhardt’s new side Hull City at Bramall Lane. A shock result that could prove to have a telling contribution come the end of the season if Leeds do finally gain promotion.
Chris Wilder insisted that Sheffield United remain in the mix despite the dismal result. Meanwhile, Regis Le Bris discussed how “tough” the Championship is after Sunderland were pegged back by Plymouth.
The two results mean Leeds remain in first place, a point ahead of Sheffield United. Three points separate Leeds and third-placed Burnley before Monday night’s battle and in fourth, are Le Bris’ Sunderland.
Darko Gyabi makes biggest Leeds contribution since joining
The England youth international has struggled at Leeds since joining the club for £5m in the summer of 2022. Gyabi swapped Man City for Leeds among the same talks that saw Kalvin Phillips go to Man City.
Gyabi however, has managed just five senior appearances for Leeds since. In January 2024, he went on loan to Plymouth and has remained there for the 2024-25 season – with Gyabi scoring his first pro goal.
On Saturday, Gyabi laid on an assist for Plymouth as Nathanael Ogbeta netted a late equaliser for the Championship’s rock-bottom club. Leeds stay four points ahead of Sunderland, and a game in hand.
He has had little impact at Elland Road and while it was his 40th Plymouth outing, Gyabi has hardly pulled up trees there either. His assist to create that gap over Sunderland is his biggest Leeds contribution yet.
