JUST IN: Rangers boss gives honest verdict on Manchester United defeat.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement expressed that he believed his team “deserved more” following their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Bruno Fernandes netted a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute for United, connecting with Lisandro Martinez’s precise cross to secure crucial three points. Just four minutes prior, Rangers had equalized when Cyriel Dessers delivered an excellent finish into the bottom corner, negating Jack Butland’s own goal that had given United the lead seven minutes after halftime.
Just four minutes prior, Rangers had equalized when Cyriel Dessers delivered a superb shot into the bottom corner, negating Jack Butland’s own goal that had put United ahead seven minutes after the break.
Due to the absence of several senior players at Old Trafford, Clement had no option but to field a number of youngsters in the second half. Although lacking in experience, the Belgian believed his team deserved a point. Clement said to RangersTV, “It is easy to go behind 1-0 to Manchester United and to lose belief when you have so many young players on the pitch who don’t have experience at this level.”
“We continued pushing and managed to score an excellent goal—Cyriel finished it off brilliantly. Unfortunately, we conceded a sucker punch at the end; the team deserved more, and a draw would have been just.”
The Gers deserve commendation for nearly matching United’s shot tally in the second half, with six to the Reds’ eight, and for generating two significant opportunities. Clement was satisfied with his team’s performance following an unfortunate early goal against them.
