BREAKING NEWS: Following Andrews’ missed two-point attempt, Bills supporters have raised almost $80,000 for the Ravens’ charity.
Mark Andrews, a tight end with the Baltimore Ravens, is receiving much-needed encouragement from Buffalo Bills fans after one of the lowest periods in his career.
New York’s Orchard Park — Buffalo Bills fans, of all people, are giving Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews a much-needed boost after one of the lowest periods of his career.
As of Wednesday night, donations to Andrews’ charity, Breakthrough T1D, a Type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization, had topped $80,000 on a GoFundMe campaign started by 19-year-old Nicholas Howard.
Howard went from seeing the Bills defeat Baltimore 27–25 in a divisional playoff game on Sunday from the stands to initiating the fundraising in just one day. After Andrews lost a fumble and missed a potentially game-winning 2-point conversion with 1:33 remaining, he was the target of social media criticism, including death threats, which prompted him to take this action.
Howard called The Associated Press and said, “I feel so bad because there are a lot of couch potatoes out there who are saying these hate comments.”
“Obviously, he didn’t mean to drop the pass, and he worked extremely hard to get to where he is. Everyone makes mistakes, including him,” he continued. “It’s absurd that they would harm him because he contributes so much to the community.”
Although he has gotten a lot of support from his coaches and teammates, Andrews has refrained from speaking in public since the defeat.
Mark is a full-fledged rival. Fullback Patrick Ricard assured him that he would be alright. “He will continue to do amazing things even though he will be in pain for some time.”
The Ravens thanked Bills Mafia on X for their support in the interim.
According to Pam Morrisroe, chief marketing officer at Breakthrough T1D, the amount of money raised in such a short period of time has overwhelmed her and her team.
Seeing the negative reaction to Sunday’s game was undoubtedly distressing. However, it’s simply amazing to see that change overnight because to this GoFundMe,” Morrisroe told The AP.
“Seeing that degree of compassion and support is amazing. And the fundraiser’s efforts are greatly appreciated. It’s amazing,” she continued. “I hope Andrews finds the positive side of that as well, even though I know it must have been a very trying time. And we are incredibly grateful to him for his unwavering support of our organization.
This is the most recent instance of Bills supporters coming together in support of players.
After Cincinnati rallied to defeat Baltimore in the 2017 regular-season finale, and the Ravens’ defeat guaranteed Buffalo its first postseason appearance in eighteen seasons, hundreds of thousands of dollars were sent to the philanthropic foundation of then-Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.
After Josh Allen’s grandma Patricia passed away in 2020, more than $1 million was donated to Buffalo’s Oishei Children’s Hospital in his honor. A year ago, after Bills kicker Tyler Bass was chastised for missing a game-tying 44-yard attempt in the closing minutes of a 27-24 divisional playoff round defeat to Kansas City, more than $300,000 was given for his charity, a local cat rescue shelter.
Howard, whose initial fundraising target of $5,000 was surpassed within hours of the page’s introduction, stated, “That’s definitely a main drive as why I wanted to start it because it’s been done in the past, and I know Bills Mafia can do it again.” “I adore the NFL, its players, and the way they support these charitable causes. And all I want to do is return the favor by helping others.
