The transfer target’s move to Championship rivals stalls over payments, which is good news for Sunderland.
After years of back and forth and loan moves, Tom Cannon will finally look to have his long-term
future sorted when he signs a four-and-a-half-year contract with Sheffield United. It’s a blow for Sunderland,
as the 22-year-old has been wanted by Kristjaan Speakman for some time,
and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was willing to pay a lot of money to sign him. It appears that Speakman and
Regis Le Bris want some attacking signings in the final two weeks of the transfer window;
two strikers are currently linked to Sunderland: Emil Riis and Matija Frigan,
but Enzo Le Fee is still the team’s only January transfer window signing to date.
Matondo, 24, has two goals and two assists in six Scottish Premiership games for the
Gers in 2024–2025. However, he has been told he is free to leave the club.
Sunderland had been linked to Matondo at Rangers after the former
Manchester City gem fell out of favor at Ibrox. Sheffield Wednesday
was also linked to the Black Cats, but Coventry City is making the most effort to
sign the Welsh international. On Wednesday, it was revealed that
Coventry City was closing in on the loan signing of Matondo from Rangers.
