Sheffield Wednesday plot new striker signing in January window as Wrexham chase Michael Smith

Wrexham are set to complete a first signing of the January transfer window but Phil Parkinson may still want more additions.

Wrexham fans have been waiting for movement in the January transfer window and we may finally have lift-off.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that Ryan Longman is set to undergo a medical with Wrexham ahead of joining from Hull City.

A deal worth around £500,000 has been agreed with Longman on the verge of finalising his move.

Oxford United have admitted defeat over Longman with Gary Rowett confirming that he has missed out.

Wrexham have hijacked that deal and whilst Longman is a smart addition, there may still be the need for a new striker.

Sheffield Wednesday plans emerge as Wrexham chase Michael Smith

Reports as far back as November claimed that Wrexham were ready to spend on a striker in January.

We have seen so many rumours emerge on that front in recent weeks but there has been no firm movement.

One rumour suggested that Wrexham were expected to move for Michael Smith before the deadline.

The Sheffield Wednesday striker is a proven goalscorer at League One level and Phil Parkinson may see him as a crucial addition in the promotion race.

Smith was left out of the Wednesday squad against Leeds United on Sunday but was an unused substitute against Bristol City on Wednesday night.

Smith’s future may well lie away from Hillsborough and the Owls are seemingly looking at more strikers.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Wednesday have a ‘pot of cash’ available to go and sign another forward.

Smith is already on the fringes of Danny Rohl’s plans right now and the signing of another striker would surely only push him ever closer to the exit door.

That could play right into Wrexham’s hands with Parkinson and co maybe left waiting until the Owls can lock down a replacement before a deal can be thrashed out.

Wrexham could finally complete leftover summer business

Imminent signing Longman offers exceptional versatility; he can play as a winger or wing back on either side, as well as up front.

Longman isn’t a natural striker though and that’s why Wrexham may well look to add Smith as well.

Signing both players would see Wrexham complete two deals initially eyed in the summer with patience potentially paying off.

Wrexham wanted Longman in July and are now ready to finally welcome him to the STōK Cae Ras.

August saw Wrexham hold talks to sign Smith but no deal was done as the striker stayed with Wednesday.

Parkinson and Wrexham haven’t forgotten about either player and may now complete a double swoop which could have actually materialised some six months ago.
