Report: What ‘many insiders’ are now saying about Chelsea’s January interest in signing Ipswich’s Liam Delap
Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is a player who’s been mentioned in recent transfer speculation as a potential Chelsea target.
Nicolas Jackson is the first-choice striker in the Chelsea squad right now, but it’s a popular belief within the fanbase that they need more competition in the No.9 position.
Ipswich centre-forward Liam Delap, 21, definitely fits the profile as an exciting young frontman. He’s heavily linked with a possible move to Stamford Bridge, too.
Chelsea have approached Ipswich twice about Delap in January because he’s someone they’re keen on. However, the Premier League side insist the 21-year-old star isn’t available in the mid-season window, even though the player is keen on a move to West London.
What insiders claim about Chelsea’s interest in Liam Delap
GiveMeSport claims that Chelsea do hold a ‘strong interest’ in signing Ipswich star Delap. Apparently, ‘many industry insiders’ feel like Enzo Maresca’s side are actually in pole position to sign the English striker.
The report adds that Ipswich don’t want to lose him halfway through this season, but his exit is realistic in the summer.
Furthermore, Manchester City do have a buy-back clause for Delap, but they’re not currently planning to trigger it.
Delap tormented Chelsea earlier in the season by scoring and assisting in Ipswich’s 2-0 Premier League win last month.
Blues head coach Enzo Maresca raved about Delap in a recent interview, too. Maresca said: “Liam is a fantastic player. This is a very good striker – as I’ve said many times, England are quite lucky because they have very good players, very good strikers…”
Liam Delap could be the next Diego Costa
If you’ve not watched Ipswich striker Delap before, he plays with the game with an aggression and a hunger that is a throwback to former Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
The 21-year-old forward is bullish without the ball and isn’t afraid of the physical battle. However, there’s also an elegance about him when it comes to his work inside the final third.
Chelsea supporters compared Ipswich’s Delap to Costa because of his playing style, which we’re seeing more and more of as he excels during his first full season in the Premier League.
In 21 league games this season, Delap has scored eight goals for an Ipswich side fighting relegation. If he can keep going at this rate, it should give his team a chance of staying in the top division. Regardless, it’s hard to picture Delap staying at Portman Road too much longer.
