Celtic Champions League prize money banked so far and what Young Boys & Aston Villa results could earn
Celtic face their final two Champions League league phase clashes this January as they bid to make the knockout play-off round.
The first season of the revamped Champions League format has so far been a success with so much still on the line for clubs vying to get out of the league phase.
European giants Manchester City and Real Madrid have been struggling to get results and face a battle to make it through, while the likes of Brest and Lille have been surprise packages.
But bringing things back to Celtic, the task is simple on paper. A victory against Young Boys at Celtic Park on Wednesday night, coupled with other results going their way, will ensure a knockout play-off spot.
And with progression, Celtic could make plenty more prize money to what they already have banked in the Champions League this campaign.
So how much have the Bhoys already earned? And how much more money could they guarantee themselves with positive results over Young Boys and then Aston Villa, Celtic’s final league phase opponents?

Celtic’s Champions League prize money earnings so far
First of all, Celtic will earn money from the Champions League from three different pots. These are the equal share participation, performance-related and value pillar pots.
The value pillar earnings – consisting of the European and non-European parts – will be finalised at the end of the 2024/25 Champions League season, so while the figures can be estimated at the moment, they are not final.
We also don’t know how much Celtic will earn from ticket revenue or commercial uplift from being in the Champions League, but it’s sure to be a hefty amount.
However, what we do know is how much Celtic have banked from the equal share participation and performance-related pots so far – and what more they could earn – so that’s what we’ll calculate.
Equal participation fee
It’s in the name. Every club competing in the Champions League league phase is guaranteed a sum just for taking part.
That figure is approximately £15.74m, which is split into a down payment of £15.1m and a balance of roughly £640k.
Performance-related bonuses
Celtic have also been raking in cash for wins and draws in the league phase of the competition. UEFA provide £1.77m for every victory and £591k for every draw.
The Bhoys have two wins and three draws so far, with their only loss coming against German giants Borussia Dortmund in September.
It means that Celtic have banked a total of just over £5.32m from performance-related bonuses.
By adding both the equal participation fee and performance-related bonuses together, Celtic have so far earned more than £21.06m in guaranteed prize money.
Potential prize money from Young Boys & Aston Villa
Let’s look at all of the financial permutations for the upcoming Champions League games against Young Boys and Aston Villa.
The most Celtic can make from those two games is an extra £3.54m:

Champions League progression bonuses
Of course, the results of Celtic’s final two league phase matches will also determine where they finish in the table, which also delivers a bonus.
The team who finishes 36th – the side at the very bottom – will be guaranteed just over £232k and that doubles for every position higher in the table.
If Celtic finish between 9th and 24th – the knockout play-off positions – it would deliver anything between £3m and £6.51m in prize money.
Moreover, UEFA reward teams with an extra £845k for finishing between 9th and 16th, which is still a very realistic proposition for Celtic.
