JUST IN: Liverpool’s ideal “title-winning” transfer is in jeopardy after a large deal is reached.
After signing a new four-year contract with Nottingham Forest, Brazilian defender Murillo will not be traveling to Liverpool this month.
Any possibility of the 22-year-old, who has contributed to Forest’s unexpected rise to third place in the Premier League, joining Anfield during the January transfer window will be eliminated by his new contract. The Reds may have to pay a high price for it, as Jamie Carragher said that he is the type of player who may help them win the championship.
“Liverpool need… I’ve said this for a long time, they need that left sided defender who can sort of do a little bit of both,” Merseyside legend Carragher said on the Stick to Football podcast, presented by Sky Bet, earlier in January. “They need structure, presence, and just a bit more power.” Carragher lamented the fact that Arne Slot lacks a left-sided center-back who can play left-back if necessary.
“That’s all I have. If Liverpool signs such player in January, I believe. It’s calling out for something, but nothing has been connected. Liverpool would very certainly win the league if they did it, in my opinion.
With just 20 goals given up in 21 games this season, Slot’s team already has the best defensive record in the Premier League. But at times, the center-back alternatives behind captain Virgil van Dijk, like as Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, have appeared a little thin.
Given that the player has already mentioned Liverpool in relation to his own goals, it will be even more painful to lose out on Murillo, who played on the left side of defense for former team Corinthians. The Brazilian mentioned other Premier League powerhouses in the same sentence, but it’s obvious that he hopes to make that move on a larger scale eventually.
