Leeds United remain at the top after a solid victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
Leeds United secured a 3-0 victory over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road, keeping them on track for automatic promotion.
Tottenham loanee Manor Solomon gave Leeds an early lead, and late goals from substitute Largie Ramazani and Ao Tanaka sealed the win and their return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.
The win extended Leeds’ unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches, but they were made to work hard for the three points by an in-form Owls team. Sheffield Wednesday, who had lost only once in their previous six matches, were hoping to close the gap on the play-off spots but fell behind early.
In the third minute, Solomon capitalized on a mistake by Owls goalkeeper James Beadle, who spilled a pass from Joe Rothwell, allowing Solomon to score into an empty net.
The visitors almost equalized quickly when Josh Windass’ shot struck Tanaka after a corner. Leeds pushed for a second goal but were denied by timely interventions from Owls defenders Michael Ihiekwe and Di’Shon Bernard.
Sheffield Wednesday responded with chances of their own, with Windass thwarted by a brilliant tackle from Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu and Shea Charles firing wide. Leeds dominated possession towards the end of the first half, and Beadle made two crucial saves to keep out shots from Dan James.
In the second half, Leeds continued to press, with James’ shot deflecting narrowly wide early on. Sheffield Wednesday briefly threatened when Djeidi Gassama forced a save from Illan Meslier, signaling that the Owls were still in the game.
However, Ramazani sealed the win in the 83rd minute, scoring with a clinical finish after receiving a cross from Jayden Bogle. Tanaka added a third in stoppage time with a clever backheel to redirect Ramazani’s shot into the net.
The final score was harsh on Sheffield Wednesday, who had contributed to an entertaining derby.
