‘In trouble’ – Derby County vs Sunderland prediction: The72
The72’s writers share their predictions for Derby County vs Sunderland ahead of Tuesday’s Championship clash.
Sunderland travel to Pride Park for a midweek showdown against Derby County, with both sides eager to rediscover a winning formula in the Championship.
Derby have been struggling defensively and have not won a game since their Boxing Day triumph over West Brom. Their FA Cup elimination at the hands of League One’s Leyton Orient denied them a home fixture against Manchester City, and they followed that disappointment with a 2-0 defeat to Watford. Paul Warne’s side have managed just two victories since early November and currently sit 19th, just one point above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Sunderland have lost some momentum in their pursuit of a top-two finish, securing only two wins since Boxing Day. Back-to-back defeats to Stoke City have raised concerns, but they remain 4th, trailing second-placed Sheffield United by four points. In their last outing, Wilson Isidor missed two late penalties in a draw against Burnley. However, the Black Cats have a strong record against Derby, having remained unbeaten against them since 2002.
After defeating Derby at the Stadium of Light in October, Regis Le Bris’ squad will aim to replicate that success, despite winning just once in their last seven away fixtures.
The72’s Writers’ Predictions
Alex Lipniski:
“Derby are in dire need of points as other teams at the bottom gain momentum, but Sunderland, despite some inconsistency, have too much firepower. With Bellingham, Isidor, and Rigg leading the attack, Derby will struggle even if they try to sit deep defensively. Given their poor form and low morale, I can’t see anything but a comfortable Sunderland victory.”
Prediction: Derby County 0-3 Sunderland
James Ray:
“Derby are in a tough spot, losing four straight games and slipping closer to the relegation zone, increasing the pressure on Paul Warne. Sunderland, although coming off a frustrating draw against Burnley, remain strong promotion contenders. With Derby in decline, I expect Sunderland to secure a solid away win.”
Prediction: Derby County 0-2 Sunderland
