JUST IN: Sheffield United and Coventry City have been sanctioned Sheff United fined £80,000 for Coventry brawl.
The Sky Blues were fined £10,000 for their involvement in the fracas that
happened in the tunnel at half-time, which was not witnessed by
match officials but was captured on CCTV.
The two teams had first clashed just before halftime, when Blades defender Anel
Ahmedhodzic was sent off for violent behavior following a
confrontation with Coventry attacker Norman Bassette.
Sheffield United acknowledged to failing to ensure that their players and/or
technical area staff did not act inappropriately or provocatively around the
tunnel area at halftime, while Coventry contested the claim.
This is United’s sixth charge for inappropriate behavior since October 2022,
as well as their fourth fine this season.
The FA stated in a statement: “Taking the offending behaviour into
account and the club’s previous disciplinary record,
notably this being the eleventh incident within the previous five seasons,
the fourth nonstandard breach since August 2024,
the commission were minded to impose a fine in excess of £100,000.
“However, there was credit given for the admittance and the fine was
reduced accordingly to £80,000.”This was the first such allegation against
Coventry in the previous five seasons, but because they originally disputed it
before it was proven, they were punished twice the regular penalty amount of £5,000.
