DeMeco Ryans Shares His Opinion on Diontae Johnson’s Actions Ahead of Chiefs Game
The Houston Texans secured a spot in the divisional round with a dominant 31-12 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Next, they’ll face Patrick Mahomes and the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. However, shortly after their playoff win, the Texans made a notable move by releasing veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Reports indicated Johnson was “visibly upset” about his limited playing time and targets during the game, leading to his release on Tuesday.
Johnson, 28, had only played two games for Houston and was near the bottom of the depth chart. He was signed as a free agent to provide depth while Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell recovered from serious leg injuries. This marked Johnson’s fourth team in a year, having been traded from the Steelers to the Panthers in March 2024, then to the Ravens midseason, before being released and picked up by Houston in December.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans addressed the situation briefly, emphasizing that the team’s focus is solely on their upcoming playoff matchup against the Chiefs. Johnson’s release eliminates potential distractions, ensuring the Texans remain committed to their Super Bowl ambitions.
The Texans and Chiefs previously clashed in Week 16, with Houston falling 27-19 due to penalties and turnovers. Their divisional-round game is set for Saturday, Jan. 18, at 4:30 p.m. EST and will air on ESPN, ABC, and ESPN+.
