Big Boost : Key Gers Trio Returns to boost march for title
Crocked trio Ben Davies, Leon Balogun, and Zak Lovelace returned to the Rangers starting lineup as the B team played Carlisle United at the club’s Training Centre.
Seven players who have played for the Ibrox first team this season were picked to the starting XI,
including Robby McCrorie, Leon King, Bailey Rice, and Nicolas Raskin.
The encounter was clearly intended to get some minutes into the legs of returning Rangers and the club’s fringe players.
It seems to have been a worthwhile practice.
Thompson Ishaka scored the Rangers’ goal in a 1-1 tie with the English League One club,
and all three players who returned from injury were given limited minutes.
Rangers trio in B Team starting return against Carlisle
Ben Davies and Zak Lovelace both played 45 minutes in the encounter,
while Leon Balogun played 67 minutes for Rangers’ B squad against Carlisle.
Davies, 28, hasn’t been seen since the 3-2 win over Real Betis on December 14th,
due to an injury that has severely disrupted the defender’s season.
With only 12 matches this season, 45 minutes for the B Team is a step in the right direction, and we expect the defender to return to first-team action soon.
Fellow centerback Leon Balogun was named on the bench for the weekend’s table-topping victory over St Johnstone but did not play.
The 35-year-old Nigerian suffered a face fracture in the 3-0 win over Livingston and will have to wear a protective mask until the injury heals completely.
Zak Lovelace suffered a catastrophic hamstring injury while playing for the first team in October, winning a penalty for Steven Davis’ side against St Mirren before being stretchered off.
After returning from the bench in recent weeks, the brilliant 18-year-old striker’s start is the latest step in his comeback.
Rangers quartet in squad’s fringe
Other Rangers B players against Carlisle included Robby McCrorie, Leon King, and Nicolas Raskin,
who all played the entire 90 minutes, and Bailey Rice, who played around an hour.
McCrorie, King, and Rice, Rangers academy stalwarts, have all found limited opportunities this season,
while Nicolas Raskin is still fighting his way back to form following a horrific midseason injury.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has stated unequivocally that the club will deal with injury issues responsibly as the Gers strive to improve their players’ strength and conditioning.
The Ibrox manager has been clear that he feels football is a squad game.
We suspect all four of these players will have a role to play this season.
