Frank McAvennie says the Rangers aren’t a good squad and are winning while “feeding off scraps” despite leading the league.

After Brendan Rodgers’ team drew with Kilmarnock over the weekend to advance,

the former Celtic striker told PLZ Soccer on February 19 that even Pep Guardiola couldn’t turn things around at Parkhead right now because the new players aren’t good enough.

While acknowledging that Rangers will now be the favorites to win the title,

he called on the struggling Hoops to

“grow a set” and “stand up and be counted” and discounted Philippe Clement’s team.

“They’ll be favorites because of the bookies and all that,

but let’s be honest, I’m going to look at it and say Rangers aren’t in any great shape,

they’re not a good team,” McAvennie remarked in the fourth minute and twenty seconds.

They are, however, winning games.

When Clement entered the situation,

he simplified it. They don’t have guys like that,

therefore you don’t see them passing it across the back.

They are beginning to play and are becoming more adept at handling leftovers.

Additionally, they are seeing successes and outcomes.

It’s something Celtic no longer does.

Frank McAvennie not impressed by Rangers as Celtic slammed

This Rangers team has already demonstrated that they are far from a good squad in the absence of an appropriate manager.

However, considering the club’s divergent fortunes under Clement’s leadership and Michael Beale’s subsequent actions,

it is also beginning to appear that they have the potential to be a formidable one under the proper leader.

The Old Firm derby loss on December 30th is still undoubtedly a negative,

but with a team that appeared disorganized only a few months ago,

the Belgian is performing about as well as he should.

The fact that the team managed to clinch one trophy,

swing the championship battle by nine points,

and qualify as group winners of the Europa League implies that there is more going on at Ibrox than McAvennie is prepared to admit.

The reason Beale didn’t stay long after his summer renovation and why Celtic are suddenly looking so fragile is precisely because of the lost chance to put pressure on Rodgers early in the season.

Rangers can’t believe the war is already won because there is still a long way to go,

but from his efforts thus far,

Clement doesn’t seem to be willing to accept that kind of complacency,

so it makes sense that confidence is growing.
