Just In: Andy Reid Makes Big Announcement on Key Position Battle Entering Playoffs
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has announced that the team has not yet finalized its starting lineup for the left side of the offensive line as they prepare for the upcoming playoffs. The left tackle position has been particularly unsettled throughout the season, with four different players starting at that spot.
In the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos, D.J. Humphries started at left tackle but faced challenges during the game. Despite these struggles, Reid noted, “I thought D.J. did a pretty good job. A few plays he’d like to have back. He’s heading in the right direction for sure. I haven’t made any decisions on that [who will be the starter for the playoffs].”
The Chiefs have experimented with various configurations on the offensive line, including moving veteran guard Joe Thuney to left tackle and inserting Mike Caliendo at left guard. This combination has yielded positive results in the past, providing better protection for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. As the playoffs approach, the coaching staff is evaluating all options to ensure optimal performance against formidable defensive fronts.
The uncertainty at the left tackle position has been a recurring theme this season. Earlier in the year, rookie Kingsley Suamataia was benched during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals after struggling to contain the pass rush. Reid commented at the time, “Sometimes you’ve got to take a step back to take a step forward.”
As the Chiefs aim for a historic third consecutive Super Bowl victory, solidifying the offensive line remains a priority to ensure Mahomes has the protection needed to lead the team deep into the post season.
