Breaking news: Philippe Clement has given Scott Wright instructions to get Rangers winger flying
Rangers’ summer hiring was dubious since Scott Wright turned down the opportunity to move on,
and we never replaced Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala, our first-choice wide players.
Wingers have been essential to the team’s comeback to form under new manager Philippe Clement,
with each member of the squad receiving an opportunity to make an impression.
There are steps that Rangers can take to overcome the shortcomings of Scott Wright though and it is
one that is a relatively easy fix.
Rangers can solve Scott Wright consistency problem
Clement is having to work with what he’s got.
Oscar Cortes looks like he will be a useful addition but to keep players like him fresh,
Wright will still be getting minutes between now and the end of the season.
However, it doesn’t seem good to be substituted at halftime by a utility player who has played defence
for the majority of his career.
Wright possesses the fundamentals of the kind of player that Clement enjoys.
He works hard, moves quickly, and is straightforward; the only issue is that his proficiency with basic passes has an
immediate impact on our ability to create chances.
The ideal example comes from a single first-half occasion against St Johnstone.
Wright only needed to play a five-yard pass into the Rangers playmaker in a 2 v 1 with Todd Cantwell,
but he did so too quickly and too far away.
Midweek vs Ross County was the same.
The 26-year-old is a wonderful player who often finds himself in great positions,
but his final ball and decision-making are far from adequate, which is why he will likely leave in the summer.
What then is Clement able to do about it?
Make it easy.
Change it up and direct the players to make certain runs instead of depending on Wright to select a partner.
When Ross McCausland or Wright gets the ball, they know they just need to play it into a specific place and don’t need to glance up.
For players making thousands of pounds a week, finding the six-yard line or penalty area should be quite simple.
The other option, which is what we seen on Sunday, is to portray a different character who may not be quite
what Clement is searching for but will nevertheless have an impact.
