Micah Richards claims James Tavernier’s goalscoring record is “absolutely ridiculous” after the right-back scored two more goals for Rangers in their victory over St Johnstone.

The Gers captain scored a couple of second-half penalties at McDiarmid Park in Sunday’s (18 February) 3-0 win,

after Mohamed Diomande opened the scoring, to bring his season goal tally to 18 across all competitions.

Tavernier has now scored 122 goals in Rangers colours since joining nine years ago,

much to the surprise of former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

Richards stated on The Rest is Football podcast [19 February, 41m 54s]: “Tavernier, by the way, has scored more than 100 goals.

“I know he takes free-kicks and penalties, but he’s got over 100 goals from right-back – that’s absolutely ridiculous.”

James Tavernier’s incredible goal-scoring record

Tavernier was ice cold from the penalty spot again against St Johnstone,

helping the Gers overtake Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Tavernier is a valuable attacking asset, whether he is scoring spot kicks, free kicks, or goals in open play.

Without being overly dramatic, there can’t be too many full-backs in international football who have scored as many goals in their careers.

Richards, an attack-minded right-back during his playing career, scored 11 goals for club and country.

That highlights Tavernier’s incredible goal-scoring record, even when he is on penalty duty.

The 32-year-old’s relationship with fans was strained early in the season, but the entire crowd values what he contributes.

If the Gers can maintain their lead, Tavernier will be the most deserving person to lift the Cup at the end of May.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson has suggested that Celtic manager Brandan Rodgers be fired following the team’s most recent victory.
