Glasgow Rangers were aware that they would surpass Celtic and move up to the top of the league table if they defeated St Johnstone in yesterday’s Premiership match.

Before the game, Philippe Clement didn’t need to have a lengthy team talk because all of the players understood the stakes, and they performed admirably on the field.

Just before the half, a goal by Mohamed Diomande calmed any jitters, and the Gers lead by one goal going into the break.

The three points were all that counted, but James Tavernier surprised everyone by scoring two penalties in the last ten minutes to give the team a convincing 3-0 victory over the Saints.

With two more points than their Old Firm opponents despite having played the same number of games, the outcome guaranteed the Light Blues’ ascent to the top. More importantly, though, is that the Ibrox team has a superior goal differential.

Even though they played well, certain players missed their opportunities during the match, and Cyriel Dessers had a subpar cameo in the second half.
