DONE DEAL :Southampton confirm appointment of Remi Allen as head coach
Remi Allen has been named as Southampton Women’s new head coach.
At the conclusion of the previous season, the 33-year-old was in
command of the London City Lionesses.
After playing for multiple organizations for 16 years,
Allen began his coaching career.
Prior to the 2024–25 season, Southampton Women announced
the appointment of Remi Allen, a former midfielder for Birmingham City and Reading,
as their new head coach.
During her 16-year playing career, Allen, 33, has played for a number of teams,
including Reading, Leicester City, Aston Villa, and, most recently,
Birmingham City. As part of the England Elite Coach Program,
the midfielder assumed the position of assistant coach for
the England Women’s Under-23s while still a member of the Blues.
This is Allen’s first full-time head coaching position; in the latter part of
the previous season, she did accept an interim position with London City Lionesses.
Though she only signed a temporary deal in March, she managed to earn
the manager of the month title that month and led the team out of
the relegation zone with three straight victories in her first three games.
When Allen first joined, he commented, “I am absolutely delighted to
be on board with such an incredible football club.”
“This is such an exciting time to be here; the players are so talented, and the club has big goals.”
It will be a fantastic journey, and I can’t wait to get started.
In order to concentrate on the larger women’s and girls’ program at
St. Mary’s, former first team manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale
of Southampton announced in April that she would be leaving her position.
Spacey-Cale stated, “We’re delighted to welcome Remi to
the club as she becomes our new Head Coach, and we begin the next stage of our journey,
” when her replacement was officially announced. Remi is a
dynamic young coach who is driven to win in her early
managerial career and has recent playing experience.
“She brings energy and fresh ideas that I believe our players will thrive on,
and I look forward to seeing her begin working with the team ahead of the new season.”
Southampton is only one of several Championship teams vying for a spot in
the WSL for the upcoming campaign. In their first two seasons after
being promoted to the second division in 2022, the south coast club placed sixth and fourth.
