The VAR independent review panel (IRP) detected 13 errors in the second round of top-flight matches,
including in December’s Old Firm meeting.

Crawford Allan, Scottish FA’s head of referee operations,
told Sky Sports News that VAR is a relatively new technique in football around the world.
So, whether in Europe or with our colleagues south of the border, we confront similar issues.
“The process works. Can we improve? Everyone is capable of improving.
Every team has the potential to progress; the top teams want to improve, as do the bottom teams.
“As I look after the referees, I want to always develop because that is the goal in life:
to produce the best product on the pitch that we can.
“Scotland, with VAR for 18 months, is right in the ballpark.
We are really satisfied and comfortable, however there is always room for improvement.
“For me, it is critical that our referees be able to make their decisions on the field of play,
and that VAR can aid in making the decision better or correct.
“I’m here to make sure that our referees are fully supported because in Scotland
we are absolutely bang on in terms of the recent results from the IRP compared to other countries that have had VAR longer than we have.
“According to the latest SFA numbers, there have been 785 VAR reviews this season,
with the bulk being “silent checks” that require no action, 51 resulting in on-field reviews,
and another 24 being factual overturns (offside, inside/outside penalty area).
The review panel stated that VAR’s decision not to propose a review of Celtic defender Alistair Johnston’s handball in December’s Old Firm match was incorrect.
