Former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire wasted no time finding a new team after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Just two days after being waived on Monday, Edwards-Helaire signed with the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad on Wednesday.

This move brings Edwards-Helaire back to his hometown of Baton Rouge, LA, where he starred for LSU from 2017 to 2019. As part of LSU’s 2019 championship team, he rushed for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns. Over his college career, he totaled 2,103 rushing yards, 595 receiving yards, and 24 touchdowns.

Edwards-Helaire was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and quickly became a key contributor, rushing for 803 yards and catching 36 passes for 297 yards as a rookie. However, his production declined in the following seasons due to injuries and inconsistency, leading to him losing his starting role to Isiah Pacheco. He also missed time in 2024, as the Chiefs continued to receive strong performances from other backs.

Now back in Louisiana, Edwards-Helaire will aim to revive his career with the Saints, who have Alvin Kamara but limited depth at running back. Kamara leads the team with 950 yards, while no other running back has more than 130 yards. It remains to be seen if Edwards-Helaire will play a significant role as the Saints push for the playoffs.
