Former Rangers ace Ronald Waterreus has revealed he quit Ibrox after the club failed to spell his name correctly

in contract negotiations.

The goalkeeper, now 53, first signed for Rangers in 2005 on a short-term deal. He would only remain

at the club for one season before departing after failing to agree a new contract.

Now, Waterreus has explained he refused to sign a new deal after his name was incorrectly spelled

in a contract offer sent by fax. Then a second fax had agent Kees Ploegsma’s name wrong.

After that, Waterreus was prepared to end his tenure with the Rangers and go on. Later,

he was a player for New York Red Bull and AZ Alkmaar.

In an interview with Voetbal Inside, Waterreus stated: “I got a fax offer from Rangers.

There was a misspelling in my name. I promptly replied with a fax,

saying that if you couldn’t even spell my name correctly…

“After that, they obediently returned the fax. This time, my agent Kees Ploegsma’s

name was spelled correctly, yet it was still incorrect. I then declared that I will never

speak with them again.

So I knew I was leaving.”

Waterreus went on to say that an interview he gave in his native country caused some of his followers at Ibrox

to react negatively.

The goalie pretended to be injured against Hearts after the harsh reaction to see how the fans would respond.

“Only I, as you know me, had given an interview that was a little bit spicy,” he continued. It was translated.

Then, when we played Motherwell at home, Ibrox, I was bitterly booed by my own fans.

It wasn’t so pleasant when there were 48,000 of them.

I was doing a very good job at goalkeeping when it occurred to me to finally make a statement.

“I therefore ‘tore’ a hamstring two minutes before the finish. Not in the slightest, although I did say,

“I have to get out.”

“So I received a standing ovation as I left the field. McLeish asks, ‘What do you have?’

as I approach the flank. “Nothing, I just wanted to see who was still whistling,” I said.
