Prolific Winger leaves Celtic on Valentine’s Day
Mikey Johnston acknowledges that in order to launch his career, he had to leave Celtic.
The 24-year-old Hoops winger started his goal tally for the Baggies in last night’s 2-0 victory over David Turnbull’s Cardiff City after joining the team on loan last month.
Even though it’s early, the Republic of Ireland international has adapted to life at the Hawthorns and is enjoying the opportunity to play competitive football.
Johnston, who played on loan in Portugal the previous season, has had difficulty securing a position at Parkhead and has shown patchy play when Brendan Rodgers has given him a run of games early in the season.
Johnston, though, feels he should have had more opportunities to play against the Scottish champions and intends to show the Celts what they are missing when he is in the English Championship.

“The Championship is a great place for someone’s career,” the speaker stated. At Celtic, I was playing, but I wasn’t receiving the minutes I desired. It was annoying when I would play well one game and then not be able to play the next.
“To be honest, I was eager to leave Celtic, and when West Brom opened up, I seized the chance.” The major events I want to play in are the playoffs, which is what we aim to achieve.
“Celtic is under extreme pressure. People may not be aware of the extent of the strain. I’m excited about it because I need the pressure to succeed, even though I’ve been exposed to it at a young age.
I’ve never done anything like this before; it’s a tremendous task in a big, competitive league. It doesn’t seem like a turn back. It’s another enormous team in a top division.”
